Milei: I am the most Zionist president in the world

Date:

President Javier Milei once again showed his geopolitical alignment with Israel and the United States amid their war with Iran, saying that the latter is Argentina’s enemy and that he is the most pro-Israel leader in the world. “I am proud to be the most Zionist president in the world,” Milei said, while speaking at the Yeshiva University, a Jewish institution in New York. The Argentine leader is currently on his 15th trip to the U.S. as president. Over the weekend, he took part in the launch of President Donald Trump’s Shield of the Americas, a military cooperation initiative between the United States and Latin American allies of the U.S. to combat drug trafficking and Chinese influence in the region. On Sunday, in another gesture towards Israel, Milei once again visited the tomb of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, an Orthodox rabbi considered to be one of the most important Jewish leaders of the 20th century. Positioning himself and Argentina on the same side as the U.S. and Israel, he made a reference to the war on Iran saying: “We will win.” While Argentina has historically had a neutral position in world conflicts, the libertarian leader has taken a 180° turn on international policy since becoming president, choosing to support Israel in its war with Palestine and Ukraine, in its conflict with Russia. “I don’t like Iran. They snuck two bombs on us,” Milei said, referring to the attacks on the Israel embassy in Buenos Aires in 1992 and on the AMIA Jewish community center in 1994. “Therefore, they are our enemies.” The Argentine president mentioned that another reason for considering Iran an enemy is because he has a “strategic alliance” with Israel and the United States. In another part of his speech, Milei said that  “the world was saved by just a centimeter”, in reference to the bullet that grazed Trump’s ear, in the attack he suffered while campaigning for the presidency in July 2024. Speaking before an audience of Jewish students and university members, the Argentine president said that “they will never be able to destroy a community with such a way of living and honoring life.” Since his presidential campaign, Milei has shown an inclination towards Judaism, although he has not converted. He has visited Jewish landmarks and institutions on several occasions, and has a good relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.  Milei is scheduled to visit Tel Aviv in late April for the country’s Independence Day. Despite the crossed bombings with Iran, the agenda remains in place. As for his current trip, on Tuesday morning he briefly met Jamie Dimon, CEO of bank J.P. Morgan, and during the day will take part in the 2026 Argentina Week, an event where he seeks to attract investors. He will depart to Santiago de Chile in the afternoon, where he will attend the inauguration of president-elect José Antonio Kast in Valparaíso on Wednesday before returning to Buenos Aires.
