Its official: 2026 Finalissima is canceled

Date:

The 2026 Finalissima has been officially canceled, after Argentina and Spain — the winners of the Copa América and the Eurocopa, respectively — were unable to find a date and venue that suited both federations.  The football tournament, originally scheduled to take place on March 27 at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar, hung by a thread after the conflict in the Middle East escalated recently. The news was announced by the European football confederation UEFA, which jointly organizes the tournament with its South American counterpart CONMEBOL. European football’s governing body put the blame squarely on Argentina, pointing out that “despite the understandable difficulties involved in rescheduling” the match, “UEFA explored other viable alternatives,” all of which were “deemed unacceptable by the Argentine Football Association (AFA).” It went on to say that three proposals were made: hosting the game at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid; staging it as a two-leg series, with the first in Madrid and the second in Buenos Aires; and, finally, playing the match at a neutral venue in Europe on March 27 or 30. According to UEFA, the AFA later declared the match could only be played on March 31, “a date that turned out to be unfeasible.” “As a result, much to UEFA’s regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been canceled,” said the statement, which concludes by thanking the Spanish Football Federation “for its flexibility in accommodating all the options proposed throughout the process.” AFA and CONMEBOL retort CONMEBOL and AFA were quick to respond.  In its statement, South American football’s governing body called out UEFA on its choice of venue. It insisted it, along with the AFA, “consistently reiterated their desire to hold the Finalissima on neutral ground […] after UEFA repeatedly insisted that the match be played in Madrid” as “the proposal to hold a single match in Madrid would violate the principle of sporting fairness.” The AFA released a very similar statement, after which President Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia took to his X account to add to it. In a five-part post, Tapia added the AFA “learned of the idea to play in Madrid via the media,” and then “accepted to play the match in Italy, with the condition it was played on the 31st.” An AFA’s spokesperson told the Herald the request had to do with “adding training dates” to make “better use of the international break,” after Argentina’s friendly with Qatar, originally scheduled for that date, was also cancelled. What is the Finalissima? The tournament, sometimes called the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions, sees the South American and European continental champions face off in a single match.  The 2026 matchup had generated great anticipation, as 2024 Copa America winners Argentina and 2024 European Championship champions Spain are among the biggest candidates to win this year’s World Cup. It was initially expected to be played between June and July 2025, but it was postponed several times as both teams already had competitions scheduled. The tournament was first conceived in 1985 and named the Artemio Franchi Cup after the former president of UEFA. France won the inaugural tournament, but the competition wasn’t played again until 1993. Argentina, led by Diego Maradona, took the title, beating the Danish team that surprisingly won the 1992 European Championship. The defending champions had to wait almost 30 years to repeat the feat when the competition was brought back and rebranded as Finalissima in 2022. Argentina, as 2021 Copa América winners, beat 2020 European champions Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium.
