After the World Cup: government to shift focus back to Congress and Mileis reelection

Argentine government officials at the Casa Rosada acknowledge that activity over the past few weeks was disrupted first by the fallout from the Adorni scandal and then by the FIFA World Cup. With the tournament now over, the administration is now looking to regain the initiative through legislative proposals, economic reforms, and the start of a broader political consolidation aimed at the next presidential election. With that in mind, the government convened its political leadership team last week to organize the legislative calendar for the second half of the year and determine the path forward for the governments most urgent bills.  The administrations crucial initiatives include a reform of the Central Bank’s charter, changes to the subsidy regime, amendments to the fiscal innocence law, and the debate over a bill aimed at protecting private property, which was recently postponed. The package will also include a new round of deregulatory measures drafted by Deregulation Minister Federico Sturzenegger. The legislative agenda, however, is no longer being evaluated solely through the lens of governance. Discussions are increasingly turning toward the political structure needed to support a potential second-term presidential bid by Javier Milei.  Several officials believe that the decisions made during the second half of the year will have a direct impact on the political landscape heading into the 2027 election. That debate continues despite internal disagreements. One faction argues that ruling party La Libertad Avanza (LLA) should move quickly to strengthen its territorial presence and consolidate its party organization.  Others maintain that the administration’s greatest political asset will continue to be its economic management and that any electoral strategy should remain secondary until the pending reforms are approved. The balance between these competing visions is expected to be tested over the coming months. The president to resume international and domestic travel President Javier Milei is set to resume an active traveling schedule, with a regional tour that also carries significant political symbolism.  Milei is expected to travel to Brazil to attend the launch of Flvio Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign in a fresh show of support for the Bolsonaro movement and opposition to President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva. Milei is also scheduled to attend Keiko Fujimori’s inauguration in Peru, hold a bilateral meeting with Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, and travel to Colombia for the inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella, another conservative leader with whom he hopes to strengthen a regional alliance of right-wing governments. The president will also tour several provinces.
