Argentina records lowest homicide rate in Latin America, government says

Date:

Argentina recorded the lowest homicide rate in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2025, with 3.7 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, according to preliminary statistics from the Security Ministry. The figures recorded by the National Criminal Information System (in Spanish, SNIC), presented on Thursday by Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva, show the number of intentional homicides 1,705 nationwide went down by 5.6%, compared to the previous year. This is the second year running that the country boasts the lowest homicide rate in the region, Monteoliva said. According to the official statistics, the number of homicides fell by 17% since Milei took office in 2023. Monteoliva went on to say that 15 of the country’s 24 jurisdictions the 23 provinces and the capital, Buenos Aires City improved their homicide rates in 2025.  She added that the number of homicides was the lowest figure so far this century. The minister explained that the decrease was not evenly distributed, but rather concentrated primarily in the jurisdictions covered by the governments 90-10 Plan, which accounted for approximately 70% of the total reduction. The 90/10 Plan, a national security strategy launched in late 2024 by then Security Minister Patricia Bullrich – currently a senator –  focuses resources on 193 specific municipalities, which account for 90% of the country’s homicides but only 10% of the territory. Robberies at record low The SNIC figures also show a dramatic drop in robberies in 2025. The national rate fell by 20.8%, comparable only to the year 2020, which was marked by the Covid lockdown, said the minister. There wasn’t a single jurisdiction in the country where robberies increased. The decrease was uniform across all 24 jurisdictions, stated Monteoliva, who said the drop represented a historic turning point.
