Argentine superstar Julián Álvarez whistled off the stadium in Madrid

Date:

Argentine football superstar Julián Álvarez was whistled off the field on Sunday after making his return for Atlético de Madrid following months of speculation over a possible move to FC Barcelona. Álvarez, 26, has been publicly pushing for a transfer to the Catalan club since before the European football season hiatus for the 2026 World Cup.  The situation escalated rapidly, with Álvarez having previously refused to report to training. However, the move has yet to materialize, with the Colchoneros reportedly unwilling to sell to a rival Spanish club. As such, when Atlético de Madrid hosted Villarreal on matchday 2 of the Spanish football league, Álvarez made his first appearance of the season for his club, coming off the bench to a barrage of whistles from the home fans. Lonesome exit After the match ended, all the Colchoneros players approached the stands to thank the fans for their support, except Álvarez, who went straight to the locker room alone, drawing another round of whistles from the fans. Atlético de Madrid head coach, fellow Argentine Diego Simeone, later explained that the club had ordered the player to exit on his own to avoid further altercations. However, the coach was adamant that his focus was on the team and not on his countryman’s situation. “I’m not here to give advice [to Álvarez],” he said. “I have to focus on my job, which is to do my best on the pitch for Atlético de Madrid. If Atlético de Madrid wants to win titles, we need to stay united, have top strikers, and for that, we all need to work in line with what is required.” For his part, Atlético de Madrid president Enrique Cerezo took aim directly at FC Barcelona for failing to “rise to the occasion and act in the way it normally does” when courting Álvarez. “He is an Atlético de Madrid player, he has always been an Atlético de Madrid player, and we have never had any intention of selling him,” he told the Spanish press.
