Buenos Aires City records lowest homicide rate in 31 years

Buenos Aires City recorded the lowest homicide rate in 31 years in 2025, with all crimes falling by 30%, according to official data city authorities presented on Tuesday. Mayor Jorge Macri announced the findings during the presentation of the 2025 Crime Map, a management tool for processing and analyzing crime statistics the city has been presenting since 2017.  Last years homicide rate of 2.5 per 100,000 is 3% lower than 2024. The figure, lower than the rate for the country (3.7) and Buenos Aires province (4.34) means the city ranks as the second safest capital in the Americas, behind Ottawa, Canada, the official statement said. Crime figures in Argentina The report comes on the heels of a similar presentation by national Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva last Thursday, where she shared that Argentina recorded the lowest homicide rate in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2025, with 3.7 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, according to preliminary statistics. The figures recorded by the National Criminal Information System (in Spanish, SNIC) show the number of intentional homicides 1,705 nationwide went down by 5.6%, compared to the previous year. This is the second year running that the country boasts the lowest homicide rate in the region, Monteoliva said. According to the official statistics, the number of homicides fell by 17%  since 2023. Monteoliva went on to say that 15 of the countrys 24 jurisdictions the 23 provinces and the capital, Buenos Aires City improved their homicide rates in 2025. She added that the number of homicides was the lowest figure so far this century. The SNIC figures also show a dramatic drop in robberies in 2025. The national rate fell by 20.8%, comparable only to the year 2020, which was marked by the Covid lockdown, said the minister. Cover photo by Buenos Aires City
