President Javier Milei’s landslide victory in Argentina’s midterms is causing new rifts in the United States, as Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren accused President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of “buying” the election to benefit hedge funds via a multi-million dollar economic bailout.
“[Bessent] and Donald Trump bought the election for your political ally in Argentina and made hedge fund investors richer,” Warren posted Monday on X. “When will working Americans get bailed out from your disastrous policies?”

— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) October 27, 2025 The war of words between began last week when Bessent called Warren an “American Peronist” after she questioned President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to provide a support package for the Argentine government. The economic lifeline included a US$40 billion bailout to help Milei stabilize the economy and strengthen his party’s chances in Sunday’s election.
The bailout package has sparked harsh criticism both in Argentina and in the U.S. amid the government shutdown and Trump’s healthcare and food aid cuts.
War of words Bessent defended the financial aid for Argentina once again, saying that the U.S. government’s support of Milei “created hope for a private sector solution to ends decades of economic mismanagement and poverty.”
“Warren should be ashamed for trying to derail a better life for the most vulnerable citizens of a valuable US ally,” Bessent wrote in an X post. He asked her to “vote to reopen the government now.”
“Otherwise, both she and all of her fellow American Peronists in the US Senate will find themselves appropriately tagged as the Grinches who stole Thanksgiving” from U.S. citizens “who are trying to provide for their families, travel, and be with loved ones this holiday season.”
Just as @POTUS expanded the Republican Party to all working Americans, he is doing the same thing globally. The USA support of President @JMilei’s Government created hope for a private sector solution to ends decades of economic mismanagement and poverty.@SenWarren should be…
— Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent (@SecScottBessent) October 28, 2025 Last week, Bessent shared a post with what appeared to be an AI-generated image of the poster from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Evita, with Warren’s face in the position of former First Lady Eva Perón.
President Trump celebrated the results of Sunday’s election on Monday, congratulating Milei and saying he had “a lot of help” thanks to his endorsement. He also gave credit to his cabinet or the result.
“That election made a lot of money for the United States,” Trump added. “The bonds have gone up. The whole debt rating has gone up.”
