Get Out! Your weekend recommendations, from book-browsing to football culture

Summer is just around the corner and Buenos Aires is filled with great outdoor and indoor events this weekend. You can browse books on Corrientes Avenue, watch some horror films in Belgrano, get familiar with football culture and design in the Konex Cultural Center, or listen to the director of the world’s finest film festival talk about the essence of cinema. As usual, the Herald’s got your back. Futcon November 22 — 23Centro Cultural KonexTicket prices range from AR$25,000 to AR$70,000 The first-ever football culture festival in Buenos Aires, FUTCON connects the world’s most popular sport with culture, fashion, design, music, art, and gaming. The event will showcase conferences, music shows, a t-shirt fair, workshops, food stations, and art shows.  Collectors, artists, content creators, and top designers will all convene at the Konex Cultural Center this weekend, with a guest list that includes Eric Baird, creator of @whereisfootball; shirt designer Drake Ramberg; local crowd flags maker Pepe Perreta; and Cuerpas Reales Hinchas Reales, a photo-collective led by Érica Voget that challenges male dominance in football culture. Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre Genre Film Festival November 20 to 30 Multiplex Belgrano — Vuelta de Obligado 2199 Latin America’s oldest fantasy and horror film festival returns for its 26th installment. As in previous years, Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre (BARS) will showcase the best of genre cinema worldwide and also host book presentations and conferences on topics like the history of gore films and women in horror cinema. Night of the Bookstores November 22 – 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.Corrientes and Lavalle, and bookstores across the City Nocturnal bookworms are getting their special evening on Saturday. From 6:00 p.m. to 1 a.m., the 15th Noche de las Librerías (Night of the Bookstores) will take place in the heart of the city where bookstores never sleep — the traditional Avenida Corrientes, home to the city’s largest theater circuit and some of its best late-night pizza parlors.   More than 20 bookstores along Corrientes will showcase their new releases, set up tables on the street, and offer special discounts. Stages and platforms will be set along Corrientes Avenue and Lavalle featuring talks, presentations, debates, and music shows. Other bookstores across the city will participate by opening late that night and setting up tables with books on the sidewalks. This year, bookstores will organize activities in Palermo, Villa Crespo, San Telmo, Villa Ortúzar, Almagro, Chacarita, Belgrano, Coghlan, Caballito and Liniers. Cannes Week and Thierry Frémaux’s Lumière November 21, 6 p.m.Teatro Alvear (Av. Corrientes 1659) Thierry Frémaux Cannes Film Festival head Thierry Frémaux is in Buenos Aires for the Cannes Film Week at the Gaumont Theater, a long-standing event for porteño movie buffs offering a selection of the best films from the world’s most renowned film festival.On Friday, Frémaux will host a free public event designed for cinephiles and newcomers alike, with admission granted on a first-come, first-served basis at the Alvear Theater. At 6 p.m., he will deliver a conference titled “New cinephilia and the importance of restoring Argentina’s audiovisual heritage,” an exploration in to how the love of movies has evolved in the digital age and the importance of film preservation.  The program continues at 8 p.m. with a screening of Lumière, l’aventure continue, the second installment of his archive project to restore original Lumière films that doubles as a warm, contemporary homage to cinema’s early days.
