Milei to attend Trumps Board of Peace inaugural meeting in Washington

Date:

President Javier Milei is set to travel to the United States for a one-day stay to attend the first meeting of the Board of Peace on Thursday in Washington, DC. The Board of Peace is an international organization created by U.S. President Donald Trump, which he has said intends to resolve global conflicts, particularly the Gaza war. Mileis 14th trip to the United States as president comes at a crucial time for his domestic politics. Congress is debating two bills the government has placed high on their priority list: a reform to labor legislation and a lowering of the age of criminal responsibility. Both received partial approval last week and are on course to be entirely approved before the end of the month, with the labor reform estimated to be addressed by the lower house as early as this Thursday.  Milei is looking to score these legislative wins in February ahead of his March 1 speech for the start of the ordinary sessions period in Congress. The Board of Peace and Milei’s upcoming international agenda The Board of Peace was launched by Trump and his administration last month as an initiative that might replace the United Nations as an instrument to solve conflicts. Argentina is a founding member. The organization was formally signed days after the U.S. withdrew from 31 UN entities and 35 other international groups that operate contrary to U.S. national interests. The country had already left UNESCO and completed withdrawal from the World Health Organization in late January. Milei is one of the few international leaders that have publicly backed the Board of Peace. Most European countries, in addition to Russia, China, Brazil, and Mexico, among other key nations, have rejected it. Among the countries that have confirmed attendance at this weeks meeting are Israel although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not be there in person as well as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Turkey, Morocco, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Mongolia, Kuwait, Kosovo, Kazakhstan, Jordan, Indonesia, Egypt, El Salvador, Cambodia, Bulgaria, Armenia, and Hungary. Milei will depart from Buenos Aires on Wednesday and arrive on Thursday morning. He will fly back to Argentina later on Thursday and is scheduled to return to the U.S. next month. On March 7, he will attend a regional summit hosted by President Trump in Miami alongside several Latin American leaders who are on the same side of the political spectrum, including Santiago Pea (Paraguay), Rodrigo Paz (Bolivia), Nayib Bukele (El Salvador), Daniel Noboa (Ecuador), Tito Asfura (Honduras), and Jos Jeri (Peru). The Argentine president will also take part in the Argentina Week in New York, a business event aimed at promoting investment opportunities in the country. He is scheduled to speak before a slew of businesspeople on March 10 before returning to Buenos Aires later that day.  Milei will continue his international agenda by attending the inauguration of Chiles president-elect, Jos Antonio Kast, on March 11.
