United States President Donald Trump congratulated his Argentine counterpart, Javier Milei, on his “landslide victory” in Sunday’s national midterms and said he had “a lot of help” from the U.S. administration. Ruling party La Libertad Avanza (LLA) came in first in the legislative race with over 40% of the vote.
“It was a big victor, and he had a lot of help from us. I gave him a very strong endorsement,” Trump told the press at the White House on Monday He went on to say that he thought the win was “really unexpected,” referencing the sizable difference of almost ten points above Peronism.
Trump also made a point to “give a lot of credit” to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “We’re focused very much on South America, and we’re getting a real strong handle on South America, in a lot of ways, including the fact that we don’t want their drugs.”
The U.S. president had already sent Milei congratulations on Sunday night after the results were released. “He is doing a wonderful job! Our confidence in him was justified by the People of Argentina,” he wrote on Truth Social.
Trump’s words were a reference to the bailout package his government signed with the Milei administration ahead of the election. The package includes a US$20 billion currency swap agreement, a credit line, the purchase of Argentine pesos and bonds by the U.S. treasury, and an additional US$20 billion private fund facility.
Milei flew to Washington D.C. in mid-October to ratify the agreement in a meeting with Trump. During a press conference the two shared at the White House, the U.S. president said that his government’s support was predicated on Milei doing well in the upcoming elections.
“We would not be generous with Argentina if he loses,” Trump said at the time, referencing Milei. “If he doesn’t win, we’re not going to waste that time, because you have somebody whose philosophy has no chance of making Argentina great again,” he added.
— Javier Milei (@JMilei) October 27, 2025 Milei took to social media on Monday to thank Trump for “trusting in the Argentine people,” adding that he is “a great friend” of Argentina. “Our countries should have never stopped being allies. Count on me to give the battle for Wester civilization, which managed to get 90% of the world population out of poverty,” he wrote on X. He finished his post with the acronym “MAGA” and the emojis of the Argentine and U.S. flags joined by shaking hands.
