Your Argentine football team has eight shots at a title this season. Heres why

Date:

The Argentine Football Association confirmed recently that eight trophies will be up for grabs in 2026. The addition of the Campeón de Liga title — controversially awarded to Rosario Central for 2025 — and the Recopa de Campeones will increase the chances  of your club taking some silverware home next year. While most of these trophies were in contention already, fans have complained the new titles throw a spanner in the works of an already complicated format. Indeed, while the league format will remain — largely — the same, the Campeón de Liga adds a new dimension to it. The league format For 2026, the league format will remain mostly the same. The 30 teams in the Primera Division will be split into two groups of 15, who will play each other once — first at home, then away — every semester in the Torneo Apertura (from January to May) and the Torneo Clausura (from July or August to December). Following that, they will also play two games against teams in the other group, one at random and one against their derby rival. The eight best teams of each group will move into the knockout stages. In that phase, they’ll face off in a single-game elimination series with home advantage to the top-seeded teams until the final, played on a neutral stadium. That will see two Argentine champions crowned, with a further title going to the Campeón de Liga, the team that racks up the most points throughout the year in the aggregated group stages.  Additionally, throughout the season the Copa Argentina will be played with its classic 64-team format. The super cups Here’s where the chances for extra silverware come in. First up, the winners of the Torneo Apertura and Clausura face off in the Trofeo de Campeones, a single-game trophy played in a neutral venue. That, in turn, gives the winner two further trophies to compete for. The Trofeo de Campeones winner will match up against the Campeón de Liga winner in the Supercopa Internacional, and against the Copa Argentina winner in the Supercopa Argentina. To wrap things up, the Recopa Argentina will match up the Copa Argentina, Supercopa Argentina, and Supercopa Internacional in a three way tournament. Each team will play against each other, with a penalty shootout to settle ties. The team that racks up the most points will be champion will be determined by points, with goal difference and fair play as the tiebreaker criteria.
